Church History

History of Big Calvary Baptist Church

Big Calvary Baptist was originally known as Little Mission Baptist Church. Little Mission also doubled as a school where people of color attended. The first church was built by the creek in Lando, and when it would rain, the church would flood. In 1920 members of the church decided to move the church to another location away from the creek. The current location of Big Calvary Baptist Church was purchased and recorded by the Clerk of Chester County on May 17, 1920.

The members of the Church cleared the land, and the men hauled the lumber and constructed the church. The women cooked, and all ate together underneath the trees.

In the fall of 1923. The members marched from the original location on Lando Creek up to the new church. The hymn that was sung was, “I heard the Voice of Jesus say come unto me and rest”.

The Church was then known as Big Calvary Baptist Church.
